Military Couple

Josh and Debra's Story

Debra is a 46 year old wife of a military veteran who did two tours of duty in Iraq. Her husband, Josh suffered multiple concussions and lung disease along with severe heart problems as a result of his service. Additionally, Josh suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic brain injury. Debra’s relationship with Josh was the center of her world. She had previous abandonment issues, and now Josh, who prior to his illness was a strong vital man, was suffering physically and mentally. This caused their relationship to suffer, as Josh was combative and did not want to leave the home. Debra was referred to the Military Families program at Family Service Morris County for counseling to help her cope with the changing reality that Josh was not the same person who she married, and to became a stronger person so she may help herself and her husband. Debra’s health was also suffering. She had trouble sleeping, constant headaches, and suffered from back problems. Knowing of Debra’s financial issues, her FSMC counselor negotiated reduced rates for therapeutic massages for Debra, to help her relieve her back pain and stress. FSMC also referred outside caregiver, to ease the burden on Debra. In addition to all the issues Debra faced, a flood damaged their home. FCMC assisted by gaining grant monies from the Military Affinity Group and Novartis to help with the clean-up and repairs. With the holistic approach taken by Family Service’s Military Families program, Debra is better coping and accepting the changes in her and Josh’s lives.
